Inspirational Home Office Design

I’ve wanted to work from home for years. I’ve never been a fan of formal offices, and so when I convinced my boss to let me try working from home a few days a week, I was very excited!

Soon I realized, however, that’s it’s very easy to let a home office turn as drab and lifeless as an office can be. I decided that I needed to make my home office inspiring, so that it was a place I looked forward to working in each morning, rather than a crux that had to be carried day after day.

I wanted a desk that was exciting to sit down at, so I started looking at different types online. I soon ran into a hand-carved antique secretary desk that had been made in the early 1900s. Secretary desks were designed for the secretaries of big businessmen, who had to handle a LOT of paperwork day in and out. The desk, therefore, had a dozen shelves and nooks to keep papers in, as well as a large overhead cabinet built into the top of the desk. It was gorgeous, and I immediately decided that this was what I wanted to be sitting at each day I worked.

I also spruced up the look of the place. I brought in flowers, and I replace them each week from my garden. Instead of a basic trashcan, I have a couple wicker storage baskets that I empty out each day instead. I have a painting that I bought at an art fair last summer hanging on my wall. All these have turned the room into one that I enjoy being in, and it makes work something I like, rather than dread.

If you have a home office, don’t let it turn into an extension of your business office. Make it the kind of place that you like to be in, and you’ll find yourself much more productive than you would’ve believed possible.
