Proper selection of gate hinges to make your gate project easier

Among home improvement projects, installing or repairing a gate can prove challenging, particularly when it comes to working with the gate hinges. Aside from aesthetic looks, there are key aspects to focus on including alignment and choosing the best gate hinge for the job. There are different sizes, strengths and even design elements in hinges that should be decided upon before the project commences.

Re-using old gate hinges on a gate replacement project might work. However many property owners wish to upgrade the entire gate or the components of the gate while they are at the project. Today’s hinges can be better-designed to last many years and can be a great investment to ensure longevity and protection for your property. You also can be surprised at the choices in terms of colors, materials and designs.

These hinges are generally known as “T” hinges or strap gate hinges, and most gates require the use of three. For gates that open inward, gate hinges are installed onto the inside of the gate; and vice-versa for outward-opening gates. A key during installation is to ensure proper alignment at the bottom as well as where the latch will be installed before screwing the hinges into place.

Many hinges are sold separately and will not reveal strength or applications. Some however may come in boxes or with some wording explaining whether they are to be used with wood fences, for example, or other types such as around swimming pools. Differences among the choices can include self-closing hinges, which force gates to close and are desirable around areas such as pools where forgetfulness can result in safety problems.

Other aspects can include hinges with built-in protection from ultraviolet rays or rust for longevity; or tension adjustability with simple tools such as screwdrivers. Again, fixing or replacing a gate may appear a simple task on its face, and certainly it can be. However, the project can be made much simpler, and the end result more desirable, with a little planning in advance.
